If rendered unconscious, however, he defaults back to his "human" appearance.

From his Kree side, Teddy has also inherited super strength (although this is partly due to his Skrull side as well), which seems to be capped somewhere about the 100 tons range, and due to the Kree having adapted to a planet with high gravity, super endurance and stamina.

Teddy's alien physiology also grants him fast regeneration, even of major tissue damage, some immunity to standard human poisons and diseases, and also complete resistance to and ability to recognise pheremone-based powers.

Apart from that, he's essentially a normal modern day teenage boy. He's fairly good at sports, average at computers and his lessons, and very good at what for him is real-world super-hero trivia.

● strengths:

Teddy is mostly a genuinely nice guy. He's sometimes sceptical about people's motivations, particularly after previous experiences, but he tries not to be judgemental. He'll listen and be compassionate wherever possible and mean it. He's very affectionate to the people he lets in, physically and verbally, and polite to pretty much everyone else. He forgives pretty easily on his own behalf, although less so when the people he cares about get hurt. And he's very loyal to the people he cares about.

He tends to be protective and caring of the people around him. He's always wanted to be a hero, and to him that seems to mean making sure no-one gets hurt- except the bad guys. He's usually more pleased by a peaceful solution wherever possible, but he will attack if he has to, particularly to protect others.

He's both patient and modest; he doesn't push his way into the limelight, and he'd rather be a good team member than cause division. He doesn't seek acknowledgement, and certainly not at anyone else's expense. He'll give up his time freely, if people need him, and he won't expect anything back in return.

He is very good at deception, particularly when it comes to pretending to be other people. Although the physical aspect of this is down to his shapeshifting, he's also a good natural mimic, and can keep his own feelings and thoughts well hidden in order to play a part, to the point of being able to fool acquaintances of the person he's pretending to be.

● weaknesses:

Some of his most positive characteristics be taken too far. He's patient and easy-going and protective, but he can take it to the point of self-sacrifice. He'll get hurt so others don't have to, and he'll be there for others even when his own life is falling apart. He'll be loyal even when he's being used. It takes a lot to make him stand up for himself, emotionally or physically.

He bottles up his feelings all the time, and very rarely expresses them openly, particularly when he feels that other people need his time and support, or if he thinks his true opinions and feelings would hurt them. This not only causes him strain, but can make it difficult for him to genuinely connect to people- a real problem in conjunction with his need to be accepted. And although it's rare, if the stress of hiding his feelings gets too much, he can unleash them a little too strongly.

He wants to be accepted and liked, even if that means hiding who he is or changing his physical appearance, an impulse he struggles with particularly at his current canon point. This can make him easily led, even when he knows better, and fuels his tendencies to both self-sacrifice and keeping his feelings to himself. He's let himself be used, even when he felt uncomfortable, for the acceptance he gained for it. His self-esteem isn't very strong, and although at core he's always the same person, some of his surface character traits shift with the situation.

He doesn't always think things through, in particular when following other people's lead, or when he's trying to be heroic. He's done some very reckless and foolish things, without considering the consequences, particularly for himself. And although it's rare, losing his anger can push him to say things he wouldn't usually, again without thinking about what it might lead to.

● skills (optional):
● housing (optional): any

● network username: avengersfan282

● network sample:

[He's uneasy about the video, but he tries not to show it, making himself solemn-faced. And, okay, maybe he's made himself look just a little bit older this once. It's easier for him to feel less like he might be written off that way, and maybe it will be easier to persuade other people too.]

Um- [Bad start, he needs to sound sure of himself like the real heroes do, and he makes himself say his words clearly and with a certainty he doesn't quite feel.]

I'm new here, but I want to be helpful. I know it's dangerous outside the barrier, but people still go out anyway. I'm willing to go out too, but I'd rather not do it alone.

[Even if he probably could, he doesn't like being alone.]

So if you want someone to watch your back, let me know? I'm pretty good at it, I think, and I'm stronger than I look. And if not- thanks for listening anyway.

[He lets himself give the camera a smile, small and quick, before he leans forward to turn the video off.]

● prose/action sample: This one and the first thread?

Room Assignment: Floor 2, bed 8

comments

Name: Theodore Rufus Altman, AKA: Teddy, Hulkling, Dorrek VIII
Age: 18
Series: Marvel 616
Canon Point: After defeating Mother, pre-party, so between Young Avengers v2 13-14

History/Setting:

The World:

Teddy's world is, very generally speaking, rather like ours. The geography, whilst slightly altered, would still be relatively familiar to an inhabitant of this universe, as shocking as they might find the existence of such varied places as Wakanda, Latveria, or Atlantis. Historically, many of the major events would also be somewhat familiar; World War 2 happened, although in our world Captain America didn't get to punch Hitler. Political history also seems similar, although diplomacy is probably a little more complex with the existence of, essentially, human weapons.

This is, at a very basic level, the major difference between the two worlds; where in our world, anything supra-natural is considered impossible, in that universe almost anything is possible and sometimes part of every day life, depending on location. Sure, most people will probably never meet a super-hero, or be held hostage by a villain, or have anything to do with magic, aliens, deities, or mutants, but they are still a known quantity; shocking, maybe, and not always accepted, but known. They're in the news all the time, after all. Part of the difference is the existence of super-powered people, both heroes and villains; they can be divinely empowered, mutants, geniuses who make technology work for them, sorcerers, aliens, or robots, it's all possible. So too is time-travel and dimensional travel, sometimes accidentally. Science tends to be a little more advanced than our world, thanks to the presence of super-geniuses like Tony Stark. Aliens tend to be a very real known threat. Magic is rare, but known to exist.

Personal History:

Teddy's early life was very normal; he grew up with a single mother, another American child. It was in high school things started changing for him; he discovered that he was a shapeshifter (initially he assumed he was a mutant) and also gay, but hid both in an attempt to fit in and be normal. It was at this point he joined the basketball team and met Greg Norris. For the next year or so Teddy frequently used his shapeshifting powers to gain access to clubs and parties or cause incidents by pretending to be various superheroes, mostly at Greg's instigation.

Due to a breakdown on the Scarlet Witch's part (often known as the House of M), the international team of superheroes called the Avengers had disbanded, leaving the Avengers Mansion abandoned. Greg convinced Teddy to break in, which Teddy did reluctantly as the Avengers were his childhood heroes. When Greg tried to start stealing the contents, Teddy finally stood up to him, causing Greg to flee. At that point, Iron Lad appeared, a timetraveller from the future who'd come back in search of the Avengers to stop him from growing up into his future self, Kang the Conqueror.

With the Avengers unavailable, Iron Lad instead activated the Avenger's Fail-Safe Program, designed to seek out the next generation of heroes with links to the Avengers. Initially consisting of Iron Lad (Nate), Teddy (now using the name Hulkling), Wiccan (Billy Kaplan, although he used the name Asgardian to begin with) and Patriot (Eli), the group quickly also picked up Hawkeye (Kate) and Stature (Cassie). A newspaper quickly dubbed them the Young Avengers, a name that stuck. Shortly after this, Teddy started dating his team-mate, Billy. After a few initial heroics and attractingnot entirely positive attention from the former Avengers, they defeated Kang the Conqueror, but in doing so the world shifted to an alternate reality where all the Avengers were dead, and few of the Young Avengers still existed. Nate reluctantly returned to the future to fix the timeline, although he left his cybernetic armour behind. This became the new version of the Vision, with none of the previous version's memories but all of his programming; this Vision decided to be called Jonas.

Shortly after this, Teddy was captured by the Super-Skrull, Kl'rt, who revealed Teddy was in fact the heir to the Skrull throne on his mother's side. He accidentally killed Teddy's mother, who was actually the princess's handmaiden who had been ordered to take Teddy to Earth for his own safety. Needing more members to attempt to rescue Teddy, the team asked Vision to reactivate the Future Avengers protocol, leading them to Tommy Shepherd, who was eerily identical to Billy in a lot of ways. Shortly afterwards, more Skrull turned up... and the Kree, to take him back to his father's homeworld, as his father was the Kree-born Avenger called Captain Marvel. A short battle ensued, with Teddy trying to stop it, but eventually it was decided he would return and spend half a year in each of his parent's empires. Instead, the Super-Skrull disguised as Teddy took his place, leaving Teddy on earth with his boyfriend and friends.

During the events of the Civil War between registered and unregistered heroes, Teddy sided with the unregistered side, and came to the aid of another group of teen heroes known as the Runaways, who had a skrull with them called Xavin. Xavin referred to Teddy as the Unifier, someone prophesised to bring the Skrull empire back together, although Teddy said he'd passed on the job. Shortly afterwards, Teddy, Billy, Xavin and Xavin's girlfriend Karolina were captured and taken to a prison called the Cube, where Teddy was tortured. Eventually rescued by their associated groups, the Runaways and the Young Avengers parted friends. Teddy also infiltrated an extra-dimensional prison disguised as Hank Pym to rescue many captured heroes, including Billy. The Young Avengers faced Loki, disguised as the Scarlet Witch, and then helped with the events of the Siege of Asgard, rescuing trapped people.

Shortly after this, he finally met his father (...actually a Skrull, although he believed he was the original Captain Marvel), and during a Skrull invasion of Earth was targeted for assassination by the newest ruler of the Skrull empire.

Then Billy discovered his mother might be the Scarlet Witch, who had gone missing, and went in search of her. Although Teddy tried to dissuade him, Billy went anyway, and found her an amnesiac in Latveria about to marry Doctor Doom. After the Scarlet Witch regained her memories, the Avengers and the X-Men turned up, as did Doom. In the ensuing fight, Stature was killed, Vision was destroyed, and Iron Lad went crazy. As part of the fall-out, Billy fell into a deep depression, only coming out of it when Teddy proposed to him. The team were also officially inducted as Avengers, but disbanded shortly afterwards.

Teddy, however, couldn't stay away from heroics, and was filmed rescuing a woman from muggers dressed as Spider-man but using his shapeshifting powers. An argument with Billy ensued, during which Teddy finally opened up about all the things he'd lost. Billy, as an apology, attempted to find a world in which Teddy's mother was alive, but instead found an inter-dimensional parasite who captured them both. Rescued by the reincarnation of Loki, the team reformed, this time consisting of Teddy, Billy, Loki, Kate, Noh-Varr (Marvel Boy) and David (Prodigy) and fled to other dimensions attempting to find a way of defeating Mother. During this, Loki managed to convince Teddy he might well only be a figment of Billy's imagination, a creation of magic; Teddy left the group to think about things, but was captured by a group of people working for Mother and taken back to her lair. Billy, attempting to access a higher level of his magic, tried to face Mother but was losing until Teddy came to reassure him that he loved Billy. With Teddy's support, however, Billy finally accessed the power he needed to defeat Mother, and the two of them returned home to work on their relationship.

PERSONALITY:

It's hard to write about Teddy without making him sound rather saintly, which he really isn't. Oh, he's a genuinely nice guy... but he has flaws and weaknesses, and they sometimes have pretty bad consequences for him.

He is generally a very patient person, and always has time and compassion to spare for other people. Sometimes, a little too much time; he has a bad habit of pushing his own feelings to the side in order to better deal with everyone else's problems and then never finding the time to deal with them himself. This includes such major events as his grief other his mother's death. Eventually it does get to the point where he can't bottle any further, and then he usually unleashes all his problems at once, usually on Billy who honestly seems to have no idea there was a problem beforehand. When he was trying to help Billy through his depression after the events of Children's Crusade, it took months to get to that point, but he did eventually reach it. He also tends to downplay his physical injuries, as he knows they'll heal.

It's also the case that Teddy is generally an easy-going and friendly guy, for all he's modelled his heroing persona on the Hulk. Again, occasionally he takes it too far. He very rarely holds a grudge for long when it comes to himself; he's capable of forming them, they just don't stay around for long. After the Super-Skrull, Kl'rt, killed his mother, Teddy was the first to forgive him, even though Billy was still angry on his behalf, and was even genuinely worried about Kl'rt's injuries. He is much more likely to hold a grudge against people who hurt other people, however, and tends to be very defensive of his boyfriend, even threatening to maim people over Billy's safety.

He can also be somewhat easily led; he's not really a leader type, not at all. Although he's better about it these days, he was easily convinced to go along with Greg Norris, only balking because of his hero-worship of the Avengers. And in his romantic relationship, it's more often Billy that takes the lead in it. He has his occasional stubborn moments, though. And he does recognise his own potential to be easily persuaded to go along with others. He also tends to try and be what he thinks people need, particularly Billy, and he's usually most comfortable as part of the group, not being particularly fond of the spotlight.

Teddy might be one of the most sensible members of his team, often being the one to try and talk the others (particularly Billy) down, but that doesn't mean he can't be a little reckless and impulsive himself. It's most obvious when he tries to stop a war by getting between the two sides, but it also comes through in his compulsive heroing. Even when he's meant to have given up the heroic lifestyle, he can't stop himself if he sees someone getting hurt. Like his namesake, he's quick to go on the physical attack, although he does occasionally utilise his powers in a more stealthy manner.

He tries to be comfortable with who and what he is, even though his self image has had a number of shocks over the years. Tries, but there's still a lot Teddy that wants people to like him. Originally, he just wanted to be normal, but even before he learnt about his alien heritage he thought he was a gay mutant in a world that has prejudices against both those things. Since then, he's learnt he's an alien, rather than a mutant, but he's still unusual. Earth might be his adopted home, but as half-Skrull (potentially still heir to the throne), half-Kree (and son of one of their greatest heroes and traitors), and raised as a human, he'd never really be able to be part of the crowd on any of those worlds. He's learning to come to terms with it, though, and can find the bright side to any of it, whether it's meeting Billy or being able to be a hero. That said, it didn't take Loki much time at all to undermine that, not really. He's also a very good actor, being able to pretend to be multiple people for extended periods; he was Hank Pym for most of a day, once.

On the compulsive hero front, Teddy can very rarely pass up a wrong without trying to fix it. He's rather like the rest of his team on that front, too. It starts with his crisis of conscience when Greg tries to persuade him to rob the then-abandoned Avengers mansion, but he's stopped muggings and purse-snatchings too. He actually has a relatively strong set of morals, but... as previously mentioned, sometimes he's easily convinced to bend them. He's a huge fan of the Avengers, and was actually relatively pleased to find out his father was the first Captain Marvel, even though they've only met once. He also edits his universe's hero wiki in his free time and knows a fair few things about the Avengers. And he looks up to the vast majority of the older heroes in his world, sometimes to the point of hero-worship.

He's also ridiculously sweet and affectionate, in particular occasionally prone to public displays of affection with his fiance. He frequently has a hug available to anyone who might need it, though. And he seems to act as the team's older brother, in some respects.

Abilities:

Teddy's powers come from his alien heritage.

From his Skrull side, he's a shapeshifter, of very nearly unlimited potential. He's never shifted into anything over approximately 8 feet tall or under 5 feet, but he does and can alter his size within those limits regularly. And he can produce extra mass; he frequently adds bulk in his Hulkling form, and sprouts wings, claws, spikes, or what appear to be armoured plates as required. He can shift his skin to be much thicker and denser, making him almost bullet-proof and able to survive severe blunt force trauma and falls. He's also used his shapeshifting powers to stretch his limbs before, rather like Mr Fantastic. His internal organs are capable of being moved, and sometimes do so without Teddy's conscious control if he's in danger. He can also willingly shift away major injuries. On a more refined level, he can also perfectly imitate other people or beings, and has fooled security systems by doing so before. He doesn't seem to be able to shift the power sets of those people, however; if he looks like the Human Torch, he can't produce flame, for example. And although his Hulkling form is green, it's suggested by an earlier comic this is merely a matter of possibly subconscious choice and homage to his namesake, the Hulk.

From his Kree side, Teddy has also inherited super strength (although this seems to be partly due to his skrull side as well), which seems to be capped somewhere about the 100 tons range, and due to the Kree having adapted to a planet with high gravity, super endurance and stamina.

Teddy's alien physiology also grants him fast regeneration, even of major tissue, some immunity to standard human poisons and diseases, and also complete resistance to and ability to recognise pheremone-based powers.

Action/network sample:

[Teddy's taken Hulkling form for this one; if his team are here, and they're still using their identities, it's probably for the best he does the same. He smiles at the camera, perfectly cheerfully, although it might look a little incongruous with his massive frame and green skin.]

Hey, just wondering if anyone's got any news on some friends of mine. I don't even know if they're here, but it's worth asking, right? So if you've heard of anyone calling themselves the Young Avengers, if you could let me know, please?

[He clears his throat, looking slightly awkward and much more anxious. He's obviously worried. Then again, who wouldn't be if they didn't know where their boyfriend was?]

Or if you've seen anyone called Wiccan- he's about five foot eight, black hair, really cute, uses magic- could you tell him Hulkling's looking for him? Thank you.

Prose sample:

Teddy had his own way up to the roof, out his window and up the ivy. It wasn't that risky to a shapeshifter who could fly and probably wouldn't even take serious damage from the fall, and it disturbed less people than going through the apartment. Sometimes, he just needed a little quiet, and the roof provided that. And it let him look up at the night sky, stars barely visible, and wonder about the other mother he'd had, the one he'd never met, and what his father was really like, and what life on his parents planets would have been like. He'd never want to leave Earth, not with his friends and Billy here, but it was just something he thought about sometimes, when it was quiet. Particularly after they'd gone through all those other dimensions, and seeing all those other Teddys.

He had been up there for about ten minutes when Tommy came up as well, easily distinguishable by his hair (and Teddy always wondered, was that part of his magic genes, or something to do with the prison they'd broken him out of? He'd never ask, though.) He'd had to move back in, just temporarily, until he could find a new place to live, but he complained about it a lot. It wasn't really a surprise to find him up here, not really.

It was pretty good having Tommy back, though. Sure, he could be loud and a little annoying, but the team really hadn't been the same without him there. And it wasn't entirely Tommy's fault, either; it was just the way he was, enthusiastic and incapable of slowing down enough to filter his thoughts before he just said them.

He pushed himself to his feet, making just enough noise to make it obvious he wasn't trying to be stealthy. It could be Tommy wanted someone to talk to, in which case Teddy could listen, or it could be Tommy wanted some alone time, in which case Teddy would just have to find somewhere else, but he'd never know without asking.

"Hey, Tommy. Everything okay?"

comments
